At Dubuque and Jackson Counties Habitat for Humanity, we partner with homeowners, volunteers, and local businesses to build stronger communities. We believe that safe, affordable housing is the key to stabilizing families and creating lasting change.
The 2023 Dubuque Community Equity Profile published by the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque revealed some concerning trends:
- The number of households at 0-30% of the area median income increased by 22%,
- Meanwhile, the number of affordable housing units for this same population decreased by 25%.
These households are often forced to spend much more than 30% of their income on housing. Housing affordability is a key factor in nearly 90% of the housing issues in Dubuque alone.

Our History
Dubuque and Jackson Counties Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1991 with a vision to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable housing. The organization’s first home was completed in 1992, marking the beginning of its impactful work in the community. For many years, Habitat for Humanity relied solely on the dedication and hard work of volunteers, building 24 homes over the course of its early years.
In 2017, the organization took a significant step forward by hiring its first professional staff member, marking a new chapter in its operations and expanding its capacity to serve even more families in need.
In 2023, Dubuque and Jackson Counties Habitat for Humanity opened its first ReStore, providing a sustainable source of funding while also promoting environmental sustainability through the sale of donated building materials, furniture, and home goods.
Through these milestones, we continue to build hope, homes, and community, with an unwavering commitment to empowering local families and transforming neighborhoods.
